Introduction To Brilliant Biology

Brilliant Biology is a text book I wrote to address the ever increasing need for a suitable textbook to go along with my teachings of Biology as a subject at School as well as to fill the void of an easily understandable, well written and enjoyable text book on the subject.

Even though the book is written at the level of Key Stage 3, that means students aged between 11 – 14 years, my 25 years of teaching experience has taught me that students struggling at higher levels, such as GCSEs (aged between 14 – 16 years) and A-Level (aged between 16 – 18 years), are unable to grasp the materials at their level without understanding of lower level material. I often have to refer GCSE and A – Level students to lower level material, especially Key Stage 3.

The concept is simple, how can one understand the advanced materials of a subject without first understanding the Basics of the subject.

Welcome to Brilliant Biology. Before we go any further, let’s make sure that we have a basic idea of what the word Biology really means and what Biology really is.

Brilliant Biology Cover PictureThe word Biology comes from the Greek words bios, which means life. The second part, logy, means a science or theory of and comes from the Greek word logos, which means word or thought..”

Biology is a subject which, basically, provides you with very useful information about how life itself interacts with the physical universe – the forms that it takes and how these forms relate to each other. Living things are engaged in what could be described as a conquest of the physical universe.

They are each and every one of them striving to survive, for as long as possible, with the minimum of unpleasant sensation and the maximum of pleasant sensation. In fact, pleasant sensation appears to be the reward for “getting things right” as far as survival is concerned. It would seem, therefore, to be of value to you to understand something about Biology.
